Blog Post #4

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please?- by Scott McLeod.
This blog was pretty neat. I like the way he had it set up. I agree with his post. I know that the internet can be a scary and dangerous place. Children need to learn how to use it correctly though because it is becoming more and more vital to our society. I think that parents, teachers or care-givers should monitor their children's activity on the internet and also teach them how research material without becoming distracted by all the "bad things."
Who is Scott McLeod?

Dr.McLeod is one of the nation’s leading academic experts on K-12 school technology leadership issues. He is an Associate Professor in the Educational Administration program at Iowa State University. He also is the Director of the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education

2. The iSchool Initiative-
I like this video. I am not really sure though if I agree with his argument or or not. I know that the Ipad and Itouch are very useful in finding information and keeping it. I dont think that the schools such just give up on pencil and paper. What if they whole internet just stops working one day. How will the kids know what to do, how can they learn and take notes?
I do agree with getting rid of the heavy costly books and copy machines. I am a big supporter for throwing trash away and conserving our environment. I know the Ipad and Itouch can replace the books and note taking. I myself use the Itouch everyday. I would have to "kinda" agree with this student on his issue.

3. Watch The Lost Generation-
source-JacobWThis video reminded me of StarWars. I liked watching the video but it made me mad. I dont want to think that in 10 years Ill be celebrating the anniversary of my divorce or that I will be working more and not spending time with my family. My family is very important to me and so is my relationships. This video may be true for some but I want to make sure that it does not happen to me!

4. Jennifer Chamber’s post and Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir- I thought this was really cool. The fact that none of the children/students have met before. I think the world is coming to the point where we may never have to step foot outside our door. We can just get on the internet and Ichat one-another.

5. Teaching in the 21st Century-
To teach in the 21st century is new and exciting to me. I hope to one day never use paper anymore. Conserving our planet is very important to me. I love nature and all it has to offer. Using the SmartBoard for teaching is also very exciting for me as well!

  1. Hi Casey, I have read your post and I have a lot of the same concerns. I think we need our gadgets to function these days but I do not think it should take over. I agree that our children need to use technology in order to function as well and not abuse it. I used the word "moderation" in my post because I think if we teach that computers and phones are a privilege and should be used wisely than moderation will be achieved. Of course monitoring is very important, not only to help with focus but also to be involved with everything they are doing.
The ischool is a possibility but I don't think it should run the classroom. We will still have to teach and incorporate discipline along with problem solving skills in the class. If they are browsing their phones for 50 minutes that certainly does not help with any of the things I just mentioned.
Anyhow, I enjoyed reading your post since you have an honest opinion on things. I have read posts that don't even make sense but yours definitely showed me that you actually did your assignment and thought out what you wanted to say.

  2. I agree with you about the iSchool initiative. I wouldn't be able to use iTouch as a sole means of learning either. But I do think that his presentation is impressive. I mean, consider the fact that he is a high school student and he probably had encouragement from his teachers to tackle this project. How cool!
